As COVID-19 activity has increased throughout the state, Meals on Wheels of Central Indiana has been tasked with updating protocol specifically for the type of meals we are able to package and deliver, and how we personally deliver to our clients. This has introduced the need for face masks; and obviously with the immense stress our healthcare system is under, face masks are hard to come by.
One of our Meals on Wheels volunteers had an idea to reach out to downtown neighbors, Crimson Tate, a local shop on Mass Ave. that specializes in sewing for all, fabrics, patterns, design and teaching the community about sewing and quilting – to see if they would consider helping us in making these masks ourselves. What started as a humble ask (with what we thought might be a slim chance), turned into a viral Facebook post from Crimson Tate, reaching out to their wonderful network of sewers, quilters and creators. Their post was shared over 100+ times with 200+ comments from eager and helpful makers, ready to contribute to making 200-500 100% cotton face masks that followed the Deaconess Hospital guidelines for COVID-19 protection. Here is what Crimson Tate posted on their Facebook page and newsletter:
“I know many of you have been making masks for hospitals, nursing homes, day cares, etc. I want to encourage you to continue your good works and know that we will have elastic for your mask making on Thursday. Our buddies, just two streets away Meals on Wheels is the only provider of medically-tailored meals to Central Indiana’s homebound community. They reached out to Crimson Tate and asked if we’d ask you to help. They need 200-500 masks for volunteers, staff, and their clients, homebound hoosiers. This is a difficult time for many. With the Coronavirus, it feels like we are entering new territories every day; but knowing we have neighbors like our incredible volunteers and Crimson Tate, helps us shine a light through the dark.
